Tesla window venting cracks the windows a few inches to let trapped heat escape from a parked car. Here's what it is, why a closed cabin overheats, and how to make venting fully automatic and rain-aware.

What is Tesla window venting?

Tesla window venting is lowering the windows a few inches to let heat escape from a parked car. On a Tesla you can trigger it manually from the mobile app, and the windows crack open just enough to release trapped cabin heat without leaving the car wide open.

Venting matters because a closed car cabin heats up far past the outside temperature. On a 90°F day, an enclosed cabin can climb past 130–150°F within an hour. Cracking the windows lets that superheated air escape, so the interior stays much closer to the outdoor temperature.

Why does a parked Tesla get so hot?

A parked car overheats because of the greenhouse effect. Sunlight passes through the glass and is absorbed by the seats and dashboard, which re-radiate it as heat. That heat can't easily escape back out through the glass, so it builds up and the cabin temperature soars well above the air outside.

This is the same reason a greenhouse stays warm. Venting the windows breaks the trap: it gives the hot air a path out, letting the cabin equalize toward the outside temperature without using any energy.

Can a Tesla vent its windows automatically?

Not on its own. Tesla's climate features can run the air conditioning while you're away (Cabin Overheat Protection and Keep Climate On), but they cool the cabin by spending battery — and Tesla has no built-in setting to open the windows automatically based on the weather. Venting is a manual action you take in the app.

Is venting the windows safe while the car is parked?
