Cabin Overheat Protection
not working?

Short answer: It shuts off at about 20% battery, 12 hours after you leave, and in Low Power Mode. If it's set to Fan Only it can't cool a sunny cabin, and even at its best it only holds the car near 105°F.

Why Cabin Overheat Protection isn't cooling your car

1. The battery is at 20% or below

Cabin Overheat Protection won't start, and stops if it's running, once the battery is at about 20%. This is the most common cause. If you park low after a long drive, the car has nothing left to spend on cooling. Fix: charge above 20% before a hot day parked outside.

2. More than 12 hours have passed

It only runs for up to 12 hours after you leave the car. Park in the evening and the protection is over by the next afternoon, when the heat peaks. Fix: wake the car and briefly turn on climate from the app, which owners report restarts the window.

3. It's set to Fan Only (No A/C)

Cabin Overheat Protection has an On setting that uses the A/C and a Fan Only setting that just moves air. On a hot, sunny day a fan can't pull the cabin down, so the car still feels like an oven. Fix: on the touchscreen go to Controls > Safety > Cabin Overheat Protection and choose On.

4. Low Power Mode is on

Low Power Mode turns off features that drain the battery while parked, Cabin Overheat Protection included. Fix: turn Low Power Mode off on hot days when you need the cooling.

5. The cabin never reached the limit

It only cools once the cabin passes its threshold, about 105°F (40°C) by default; newer software lets you pick a lower one. A cabin at 100°F feels hot but hasn't triggered it yet. Fix: choose a lower activation temperature if your car offers one.

6. It's working, but it only caps the heat

Cabin Overheat Protection isn't meant to keep the car comfortable. It holds the cabin near its limit, so you still come back to a car around 100°F. That's the feature doing its job, not failing.

How the feature works, and what it costs in range, is in Cabin Overheat Protection, explained.

The fix that doesn't depend on the battery

Every one of those limits comes from running the A/C on battery. Venting the windows works the other way: a small gap at the top of each window lets the hot air out, so the cabin stays much closer to the outside temperature and nothing runs. The two work well together. Venting does most of the work for free, and Cabin Overheat Protection caps whatever is left.

The catch is that Tesla's Vent button is manual, and it won't close the windows when it rains.

Automatic venting

VentMode vents your windows when it's hot and dry where the car is parked, closes them when rain is coming and every evening, and uses no battery while they're open. It has no 12-hour limit and no 20% cutoff. It only acts on a parked car and connects through Tesla's official Fleet API.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Tesla hot even with Cabin Overheat Protection on?

Most often the battery is at or below 20%, more than 12 hours have passed since you left, or the setting is Fan Only instead of On. Even when it works, it only holds the cabin near about 105°F, so the car still feels hot.

How long does Cabin Overheat Protection last?

Up to 12 hours after you exit the car, or until the battery drops to about 20%, whichever comes first. Low Power Mode also turns it off.

Does Cabin Overheat Protection work below 20% battery?

No. It won't start, and it stops running, once the battery is at about 20% or less.

Should I use On or Fan Only?

On uses the A/C and actually cools the cabin, at a battery cost. Fan Only uses less energy but can't bring the temperature down on a hot, sunny day.

Is Cabin Overheat Protection safe for kids or pets?

No. Tesla warns the cabin can still become dangerously hot because of automatic shut-off or extreme conditions. Never leave a child in the car, and use Dog Mode for a pet.
