Cabin Overheat Protection, explained: what it does, what it costs, and where it stops

What Cabin Overheat Protection is
Cabin Overheat Protection is a Tesla feature that keeps a parked car's interior from climbing past roughly 105F (40C). When the cabin sensor reads above that threshold, the car runs its climate system on its own, with nobody inside and the car locked, until the temperature drops back down or the feature times out. It exists because a closed car in the sun does not just get warm, it gets dangerous: on a 90F day a sealed cabin routinely passes 130F within half an hour, and interior surfaces go higher still.
It is a protection feature, not a comfort feature. The goal is to keep the dashboard, screen, trim, and anyone who opens the door from meeting a 150F cabin, not to hand you a cool car when you come back. That distinction matters for deciding whether it is enough on its own, which is the rest of this guide.
How to turn it on
In the car, open the climate controls while parked and look for Cabin Overheat Protection, or go to Controls, then Safety. In the Tesla phone app, open Climate and scroll to the Cabin Overheat Protection setting. The exact menu location has moved between software versions, so if it is not where you expect, search the car's settings for 'overheat'.
You will see three options. 'On' uses the air conditioning to hold the cabin at or below about 105F. 'No A/C' runs only the fan, pulling in outside air, which uses far less energy but cannot promise the cabin stays under 105F on a hot day. 'Off' disables it entirely. Whatever you pick sticks between drives until you change it.
One setting that trips people up: on some configurations Cabin Overheat Protection will not engage unless 'Keep climate settings' or a related option is also enabled. If you have it switched On and the car still bakes, check that a second toggle is not holding it back.
The 12-hour limit
Cabin Overheat Protection runs for up to twelve hours after you leave the vehicle, then stops. Tesla states this in the owner's manual, and it is the single most important thing to know about the feature, because the situations where you most want a cool car are exactly the ones that outlast it: a full workday plus a commute, a day at a theme park, and above all an airport trip where the car sits for days.
After the twelve hours elapse, nothing is holding the temperature down anymore, and the cabin heats up to whatever the greenhouse effect produces that day. If you park at 8am and the feature quits at 8pm, an evening pickup finds a car that has been unprotected for hours.
What it draws from the battery
'On' mode cools by running the air-conditioning compressor, which is one of the largest loads a parked Tesla can place on its battery. Tesla does not publish a kWh figure, and real owner measurements vary widely: some report roughly 2 kW while the compressor actively cycles on a hot day, while range-loss tests imply a lower average once you account for the compressor switching on and off rather than running flat out. Treat it as a variable cost that scales with how hot the day is and how long the car sits, not a fixed number.
'No A/C' mode costs almost nothing because it is just a fan, but it also does much less: it can only bring the cabin toward outside air temperature, and on a genuinely hot day outside air is not cool enough to matter. Cabin Overheat Protection also will not run if the battery is low, roughly below 20 percent, so a car left for a long stretch can drop under that line and lose the protection regardless of the timer.
What it does not do
It never opens a window. The trapped, superheated air stays in the cabin, and the air conditioning fights it continuously instead of letting it leave. That is why the feature has an energy cost at all: it is treating the symptom rather than removing the cause.
It does not keep the car comfortable. 105F is the target for 'On' mode, and that is still hot enough that the steering wheel, seat buckles, and screen are unpleasant to touch. It is a ceiling on danger, not a thermostat set to a nice temperature.
It is not a pet or child safety system. Tesla is explicit that you should not rely on Cabin Overheat Protection to keep a pet or a person safe, and points to Keep Climate On or Dog Mode for that, both of which hold a set temperature indefinitely rather than just capping at 105F for twelve hours.
Cabin Overheat Protection vs. Keep Climate On vs. Dog Mode
These three get confused constantly. Cabin Overheat Protection is passive and automatic: you set it once, and it engages by itself whenever a parked car gets too hot, for up to twelve hours, aiming at 105F. Keep Climate On holds the temperature you last set and runs until you turn it off or the battery gets low, but you have to enable it each time you leave the car. Dog Mode does the same as Keep Climate On but also shows a message on the screen telling passersby the pet is fine and the climate is running.
For a car that just sits in a parking lot all day with nobody in it, Cabin Overheat Protection is the right tool. For a pet or anything living, you want Keep Climate On or Dog Mode, and you should not leave without confirming it is actually running.
The passive option Tesla leaves out: venting
There is a second way to keep a parked cabin from overheating, and Tesla's own app supports it: cracking the windows a few inches. Venting works with the physics instead of against them. Instead of running a compressor to remove heat that keeps building, it gives the hot air a path out, and the cabin settles close to the outside temperature on its own. It costs no battery, it has no twelve-hour limit, and on most hot days it keeps the cabin cooler than 'On' mode's 105F target.
The catch is that Tesla only exposes venting as a manual, one-tap action in the app. There is no setting that vents automatically based on the weather the way Cabin Overheat Protection runs the A/C automatically. So the cheaper, more effective method is the one you have to remember to trigger yourself, every hot day, and undo before rain or nightfall.
When Cabin Overheat Protection is enough, and when it isn't
It is enough if you park in the shade or a garage most of the time, your car rarely sits in direct sun for more than a few hours, and you mostly care about not opening the door to a 150F blast. In that case leave it On and move on.
It is not enough if you regularly park outside in a hot climate, your car sits through full workdays or longer in the sun, you care about range and do not want to spend it cooling an empty car, or you want the cabin genuinely cool rather than merely under 105F. Those are the cases where venting does the job better, and where automating the venting is worth it.
The two are not mutually exclusive. The setup that works best is Cabin Overheat Protection left On as a safety floor, with automatic venting handling the day-to-day so the cabin rarely gets hot enough for the A/C to kick in at all.
How VentMode fills the gap
VentMode automates the venting Tesla leaves manual. You connect your car once through Tesla's official login, and from then on it checks the weather at your car's actual location about once an hour. When it is hot and dry during your set daytime hours, it cracks the windows. If rain shows up in the current conditions or the 3-hour forecast, or your evening close time arrives, it rolls them back up. It only ever acts on a parked car, and it never opens the windows more than the few inches Tesla's own app allows.
