What does Defrost Car
do on a Tesla?
Short answer: Defrost Car turns the cabin heat up high and runs the windshield, window and mirror defrosters to melt ice and snow, and it warms the car enough to help free frozen door handles and windows. Start it from the Tesla app about 30 to 45 minutes before you leave on an icy morning.
What the Defrost Car button does
In the Tesla app's Climate screen, Defrost Car (sometimes shown as just Defrost) sets the climate to a high temperature and turns on the front and rear defrosters and heated mirrors, and on cars that have them, the wiper and other ice-melting heaters. The point is to melt ice on the glass and warm the doors and handles, not just to warm the cabin.
It uses battery like any heating feature, and more in deep cold. If the car is plugged in, much of that energy comes from the wall instead.
How long to run it
For light frost, 10 to 15 minutes is often enough. For a layer of ice, owners usually start it 30 to 45 minutes ahead. Thick ice or freezing rain can take longer, and you may still need an ice scraper for the edges. A plastic scraper is fine on the glass; avoid metal.
How to open a frozen Tesla door handle
Flush handles, like those on Model 3 and Model Y, can get sealed in by ice. Run Defrost Car first so the door warms up. Then press firmly on the wide end of the handle, or tap around it with the heel of your hand, to crack the ice. Don't pry at it with anything hard, and don't pour hot water on it: hot water can crack cold glass and refreezes around the seals.
On Teslas with frameless windows, the glass drops slightly when you open the door. If the window is frozen to the seal it can't drop, so let defrost free it before you pull hard on the door.
Avoiding it next time
Schedule the car to warm up before you leave (Scheduled Departure or a climate start from the app), park nose-in to a wall or under cover when freezing rain is forecast, and keep the battery charged so you can afford a long defrost. Folding the mirrors at night helps too.
VentMode in winter
VentMode only cracks the windows when it's hot and dry, so in cold weather your windows stay shut. It also closes them when rain is coming and every evening, so a forgotten open window doesn't fill with snow or freezing rain.

Frequently asked questions
What does Defrost Car do on a Tesla?
It turns the heat up high and runs the windshield, window and mirror defrosters, plus other ice-melting heaters on cars that have them, to melt ice and free up doors and handles.
How long should I run Tesla defrost?
About 10 to 15 minutes for frost and 30 to 45 minutes for ice. Start it from the app before you go out.
How do I open a frozen Tesla door handle?
Run Defrost Car first, then press firmly on the wide end of the handle or tap around it to crack the ice. Don't pry or pour hot water on it.
Does Defrost Car drain the battery?
Yes, it runs the heater at high power. In deep cold that's a noticeable amount. If the car is plugged in, much of it comes from the charger.
Why won't my Tesla window go down in the cold?
It's probably frozen to the seal. Let Defrost Car run until the ice softens before forcing the door or window.
