Getting started
How do I automatically vent my Tesla's windows when it's hot?
Sign up for VentMode, connect your Tesla through Tesla's official OAuth login, and turn on automation for the vehicle. From then on VentMode checks conditions every hour and cracks your windows open when it's hot and dry, then closes them by evening. There's no app to open and nothing to remember.
How long does setup take?
About a minute. You create an account, authorize VentMode on Tesla's official login screen, and flip automation on for your car. There's no hardware to install and nothing to configure beyond a single toggle per vehicle.
Do I need to install anything in my car or on my phone?
No. VentMode runs entirely in the cloud and talks to your Tesla through Tesla's official API. There's no OBD dongle, no app to sideload, and no jailbreak. You can add VentMode to your phone's home screen as a web app if you'd like quick access to the dashboard.
How much does VentMode cost?
VentMode is a subscription. You can see current pricing and start on the subscribe page after you create an account. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time from the billing portal.
How it works
When exactly does VentMode open my windows?
When the outside temperature at your car's location reaches your threshold (70°F by default) during your vent hours (10am–7pm in the car's local time by default), no rain is forecast, and the rain chance for the next 3 hours is under your limit, VentMode cracks the windows open a few inches.
When does it close them?
VentMode closes the windows if rain becomes likely, and it performs a hard close at your close hour (7pm by default) every night regardless of conditions. Windows never stay open overnight.
How often does VentMode check conditions?
Roughly once an hour. It runs on a schedule in the background (Vercel Cron), so every decision is based on the current weather rather than a setting you configured once and forgot.
Where does the weather data come from?
VentMode uses Open-Meteo for current conditions and a 3-hour forecast at your vehicle's location. It checks the temperature, whether rain is forecast, and the rain chance before venting. You choose the rain chance at which it holds off, per vehicle, from the dashboard.
Can I change the temperature threshold or vent hours?
Yes. Each vehicle has its own temperature threshold, vent hours, and rain sensitivity (the forecast rain chance at which VentMode holds off, 20% by default), all adjustable from the dashboard. You can also enable or pause automation per vehicle.
Does VentMode notify me when it opens or closes my windows?
Yes. VentMode can send a push notification each time it vents or closes your windows, so you always know what happened without checking. Enable notifications from the dashboard, and add VentMode to your phone's home screen to receive them like a native app.
What happens if I'm driving when it would normally vent?
Nothing. VentMode only acts on parked cars. Before doing anything it checks your vehicle's state without waking it. If you're driving, actively charging, or otherwise using the car, it skips that cycle and tries again later. It only wakes a car (briefly) when it's parked and a vent or close is actually due.
Safety
Is it safe to leave my Tesla's windows cracked open?
VentMode only vents the windows a few inches while the car is parked, during your vent hours, and only when no rain is forecast and the rain chance is under the limit you set. It performs a hard close at your close hour (7pm by default) every night without exception, so windows never stay open overnight.
What if it starts raining while my windows are open?
VentMode watches the current conditions and the 3-hour forecast on every hourly check. If rain becomes likely, it closes the windows. Because it also hard-closes every evening, there's no scenario where windows sit open overnight through a storm.
Does venting the windows make my car easier to break into?
VentMode only opens the windows a few inches (the same vent position Tesla offers natively) and only during daytime hours while you're away, then closes them by evening. It never fully lowers the windows or unlocks the car.
Will VentMode wake my car or drain the battery?
VentMode reads your vehicle's state without waking it, and only wakes the car when a vent or close is actually due, typically twice a day. Waking to send one command uses a tiny amount of energy; it never keeps the car awake or polls it while it sleeps, so the impact on your battery is minimal.
Security & privacy
Does VentMode need my Tesla password?
No. You authorize VentMode through Tesla's official OAuth flow, so VentMode never sees your password, only a scoped access token. You can revoke that access from your Tesla account at any time.
How are the commands to my car secured?
Commands are cryptographically signed with HMAC-SHA256 through Tesla's Vehicle Command Protocol, using an ECDH session and a per-command counter that makes replay attacks structurally impossible. Your signing key never leaves the server.
How is my data protected?
Traffic between your browser and VentMode is encrypted in transit with TLS, and your password is stored only as a salted bcrypt hash. The Tesla access tokens that let VentMode operate your car are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, so they can't be read directly from our data store. No system is perfectly secure, but we follow current best practices to protect your account and vehicle.
Can I disconnect my Tesla or delete my account?
Yes. You can pause automation at any time from the dashboard, disconnect your Tesla, and revoke VentMode's access from your Tesla account. Contact support to fully remove your account and associated data.
Compatibility
Which Teslas does VentMode work with?
VentMode works with Tesla vehicles that support window venting through the Tesla Vehicle Command Protocol, including Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. You connect your car once and automation runs on its own.
Does VentMode work outside the United States?
VentMode relies on Tesla's official API and Open-Meteo weather, both of which are available broadly. Vent hours follow your car's own local time zone, taken from its GPS location, so the schedule applies wherever the car is parked.
Can I use VentMode for more than one Tesla?
Yes. You can connect multiple vehicles to one account and enable or pause automation independently for each from the dashboard.
Billing
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open the billing portal from your dashboard and cancel there. Your automation continues until the end of the current billing period.
Is my payment information secure?
Yes. Payments are processed by Stripe. VentMode never stores your full card details on its own servers.
